Why is exfoliation so important?
The reason is simple. The skin is biologically programmed to grow several layers. The uppermost layers are dry, dead skin cells. Designed to protect the skin, these layers have the unfortunate side effect of interfering with the absorption of product, making the skin appear drier or older, and accentuating the appearance of wrinkles. Therefore, the smartest skin treatments include regular exfoliation to continually remove these self-renewing layers of dead skin cells.

There are basically two ways to exfoliate. Manually (scrubs, microdermabrasion) or chemically (fruit acids, retinol). You can use either method, or both, but the important thing to keep in mind is that your skin has grown layers for a reason, specifically protection. Deep exfoliation, whichever method you choose, may very possibly increase sensitivity or cause irritation, since these protective barriers are removed in the process.

Removing dead skin cells with a quality scrub will help your body lotion absorb deeper in to the skin, and lend to a smoother, softer skin texture.
